"Every bit as territorial?" MS is not even close. Apple maintains complete control of the entire stack. Hardware, OS, Content, and (with the Apple Stores) even distribution. For the iPhone (and therefore iPad), they have to approve you app before it can be distributed via the apple store (where you are forbidden to create an application that allows extensions or "duplicates" the functionality of Apple's own chosen software). Even if granted access, they can revoke access to the only distribution channel at their whim and without warning or recourse. As for the the general computers (iMac, Macbooks, etc), another word comes to mind that sums it up perfectly: "Hackintosh."

Perhaps that is the price that must be paid for a system that "just works." With absolute control of hardware and software, you don't have to worry about incompatible drivers or conflicts. All things considered, not a bargain that I'm willing to make.

Not saying MS is worthwhile either. A different dictator who is (not-so) secretly covets the amount of power held by the monarch of the other kingdom. They only offer more freedom in allowing their subjects a wider array of housing to live in.

Then there's Google. A dictatorship where all your property is stored in the government's strongholds (though they promise you can get it whenever you want.)

Whenever the mood hits me really. You have to be in the mood to write something, and you have to have something to say. Whether or not anyone's listening is an entirely different story.

I totally agree with you. Sometimes people do want a bologna sandwich as opposed to a steak, but that falls under the whole "why would I buy a Mac when I can buy a $2 Dell/Gateway box" argument.

.. and there's nothing wrong with that.

The things I do with a computer tend to make using a Windows box rather infuriating, even with the same software on both. Take, for example, Adobe Fireworks. Same package, same version loaded on both my MacBook Pro and the eight-core, dual processor Xeon PC at work.

The Macintosh version is -- for some unfathomable reason -- just easier to use, not to mention twice as fast.. That's just a matter of the operating system being designed more like my mind works than the Windows platform ever has been.

Then again, with everything I went through with the PC and Microsoft in particular, I just cannot fathom giving them another single dime of my money.

Is Apple any better or more scrupulous? Probably not. They're a big company and every bit as territorial as Microsoft but to me, they make the better OS, and for me, I'd rather wait for the steak than settle for the bologna.

Hope all is well and thanks for stopping by.

You coworker really hit the nail on that head. That attitude is exactly why I *really* didn't want to get a Mac when I got my new laptop. I didn't want to be "one of those people". (That and I don't find Windows particularly frustrating or difficult).

But your arguements also make the assumption that people have the money and WANT the performance of a top of the line computer. Sometimes, all they want is a nice middle of the road system and Mac...doesn't really serve that market.

I didn't even know that they had changed the recipe when I tried it and I thought there was some bad cheese on there or something. It was not good. Once I realized the recipe had actually changed I gave it another shot but it was still bad. I'll never order from there again.
